10 Little Things That Help Me Love Being at Home

How are you all doing friends? What a year we’re having! How is it only August? And what else could 2020 possibly throw at us?! I’ve been trying everything I can to wrap my head around our new reality, but am definitely a work in progress!

Among the changes for us all collectively over these past few months has been the extra time we’re spending in our homes.

My family and I have hardly ventured out since the beginning of the pandemic. We’ve pretty much limited our trips out to essential grocery runs and some brief visits to the park/pool so that the kids don’t go too stir crazy. The only time we’ve been away from our home for more than an hour or so was a short glamping trip to the mountains.

So like many of us, I’m having to learn to love being at home more than ever.

Home is where we spend a significant part of our lives, and it should be a place where we find comfort, joy, and peace. For many of us, the thought of being at home can evoke feelings of safety, relaxation, and contentment. But what exactly makes a house feel like a home? It’s often the small things—the everyday details—that bring a sense of warmth and belonging to our living spaces. Here are 10 little things that help me love being at home.

1. Personalized Spaces

One of the most essential things that make me love being at home is having spaces that reflect my personality and style. Whether it’s a cozy reading nook with soft cushions or a workspace filled with inspiring quotes, each area of my home is uniquely mine. Personalizing my space with photos, art, or even the arrangement of furniture creates an atmosphere that feels intimate and comforting. It’s these personalized touches that turn a house into a sanctuary.

2. Scented Candles

Scent plays a huge role in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. For me, lighting scented candles is a ritual that instantly makes me feel more at ease. The soft flicker of candlelight combined with the soothing aroma of lavender, vanilla, or sandalwood helps create a calming ambiance. Whether I’m winding down after a long day or enjoying a quiet evening with a book, the glow and scent of candles enhance my sense of comfort.

3. Soft Lighting

The lighting in a home can make all the difference in how it feels. Harsh, bright lights can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I prefer to use soft, ambient lighting to create a relaxed atmosphere. String lights, lamps with warm bulbs, and dimmers are my go-to solutions for achieving that perfect cozy glow. This softer lighting transforms my home into a peaceful retreat, making it the perfect place to unwind.

4. Comfortable Furniture

Having comfortable furniture is key to enjoying time at home. I’ve invested in a few essential pieces that not only look great but are also incredibly comfortable. A plush couch, a well-cushioned armchair, and a supportive mattress are all small things that make a big difference. These pieces invite relaxation and make it easier to truly settle in and enjoy my space.

5. A Well-Organized Space

Clutter can create stress, so keeping my home organized is another thing that helps me love being at home. Having designated places for everything—from books and shoes to kitchen utensils—makes it easier to maintain a tidy environment. A clean and organized space allows me to relax without the distraction of mess. I also find that organization makes daily tasks, like cooking or working, much more enjoyable.

6. Houseplants

Bringing nature indoors with houseplants adds a touch of freshness and life to any home. Not only do plants purify the air, but they also bring a sense of calm and beauty to my living space. Whether it’s a few succulents on a windowsill or a large fern in the corner of the room, houseplants help me feel more connected to nature, which is especially refreshing when I’m spending long periods at home.

7. Cozy Blankets and Pillows

There’s something incredibly comforting about wrapping yourself in a soft blanket or sinking into a pile of fluffy pillows. I always keep a variety of blankets and pillows around, whether it’s for curling up on the couch for a movie night or adding extra comfort to my bed. These little additions make my home feel like the ultimate comfort zone, especially during colder months.

8. Background Music or Sounds

Having background music or sounds playing softly in the house creates an atmosphere that I love. Depending on my mood, I might play some calming instrumental music, nature sounds, or even lo-fi beats. Music can change the entire vibe of a space, making it feel more welcoming and lively. It’s also a great way to enhance the coziness of home when I’m doing simple tasks like cooking, cleaning, or just relaxing.

9. Personal Rituals

One of the most rewarding parts of being at home is having personal rituals that make everyday moments special. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea in the morning while reading the news, doing a quick yoga session in the living room, or lighting incense before bed, these small, mindful habits help me appreciate the time I spend at home. Rituals like these create a rhythm to my day that’s grounding and comforting.

10. Home-Cooked Meals

Cooking at home is one of the little things that brings me a lot of joy. There’s something deeply satisfying about preparing a meal in my own kitchen and enjoying it in the comfort of my dining room. Whether it’s trying out a new recipe or making a family favorite, the act of cooking and eating at home makes me feel more connected to my space. Plus, the smell of food wafting through the house adds an extra layer of warmth and coziness.

Ultimately, loving being at home is about finding joy in the little things. Whether it’s the ambiance created by soft lighting and scented candles or the comfort of cozy blankets and well-organized spaces, these seemingly small details have a huge impact on how I feel when I’m at home. By making intentional choices to surround myself with things that bring me comfort and happiness, I’ve cultivated a home that’s not just a place to live but a space I truly love.
