It’s officially summer now, which means that it’s officially jean shorts season! Being comfy and casual is my jam so I more or less live in them during the summer months. And while I own many (too many??) blue cutoffs in various shades and styles, I think that this is the first pair of black denim shorts I’ve ever owned!
I was drawn to these Topshop shorts as soon as I spotted them in the store – love at first sight! Topshop also has a special place in my heart because I’ve been shopping there since I was a teen (it’s a bit of a British institution, like Abercrombie & Fitch is here in the US). The fit of these is amazing – not too short and not too tight around the thighs (phew!). And they have just the right amount of distressing.
But in my opinion, black can be a tricky color for summer. While blue or white denim seem to go with just about anything, black can look a little harsh against other colors. When it comes to pairing black denim, I think that light (and not necessarily bright) shades work best.
Adding white – such as a knotted t-shirt or button down – is always a classic option. In addition, pale grey, black and white stripes, blush pink and chambray all look fab with black denim too. The button front tank I’m wearing is one of my current favorites, and contrasts nicely against the black.
I think that black denim shorts lend themselves to a more minimalist look, so I personally like to keep my outfits sleek and simple. But if your style is more boho, you could definitely balance the look with a flowy, less fitted top, or layer a kimono over the top.
I used a few accessories just to add some warmth – gold jewelry and a cognac bag will always do the trick. Lastly, some fun flat sandals… I can almost always find a way to work in a bit of leopard print 🙂 You can also check out my round up of cute summer slide sandals here.
