With Christmas just a few weeks away now, I thought I’d share this idea for a simple and inexpensive decoration that you can make at home, with minimal effort required! I had seen something similar in a home decorating magazine and thought that it would be easy to recreate (and it was!).
What I love most about this project is that you probably already have most of what you need. It just goes to show that you really don’t have to spend a fortune to bring some stylish festive touches to your home!
Easy, elegant DIY Christmas decor
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Glass vase or large hurricane candle holder
- Tree branch
- Spray paint
- Epsom salt
Step 1: find and paint your tree branch
I scoured our backyard until I found the size and shape I wanted. This one was perfect because it has plenty of smaller off-shoots from which to hang the ornaments.
Take the branch outside, or to a well ventilated area, and spray paint it the color of your choice. I’m a bit obsessed with painting everything gold at the moment, so always seem to have cans of gold spray paint laying around!
Step 2: position your tree in the vase and add “snow”
You can put a dab of poster tack or putty on the bottom of your branch to hold it in place.
For the snow, I recently discovered that Epsom salt makes a great substitute for the fake stuff you can buy in stores at this time of year. I use it to fertilize many of the plants and shrubs in our garden, so we typically have a carton to hand.
Step 3: hang your ornaments
Lastly, add some sparkle by adorning the branches with the ornaments of your choosing. I don’t think there’s a room in our home that doesn’t feature blue in some way (my absolute favorite color for decorating!) so of course it had to feature here too.
And there you have it… an inexpensive yet chic decorating idea that would be perfect for adding some extra holiday cheer to an entryway or other small space in your home.
Best of all, it didn’t cost me a penny, with the exception of the sweet little bird that you can see sitting underneath the branches (an impulse buy, from where else but Target!).
Now onto the next project… happy holidays!
